Since 2013, Mr Doug Baird OAM has carried a powerful mission across Australia. After the loss of his son, Cameron BAIRD VC MG (KIA), who died in action serving his country and mates in Afghanistan, Doug has dedicated himself to sharing Cameron’s story. His journey has taken him to schools, military units, civic groups, sporting clubs, and Anzac events, where he speaks about courage, ethics, and the ultimate sacrifice made in service to Australia. These values resonate deeply with Australians and reflect the true spirit of the nation.

Recently, a decision by the Australian Federal Government to remove a small travel allowance under the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) scheme threatens Doug’s ability to continue this important work. This call to arms in supporting Doug is vital to preserving an important part of Australian military history and the values that define us.
Doug’s presentations do more than recount military history. They connect with audiences on a personal level, making the sacrifices of service members real and relatable. His story helps:
Educate students about the realities of war and service
Promote respect for veterans and their families
Encourage community support for military personnel
Preserve the legacy of Australian values in future generations
These outcomes strengthen national identity and remind Australians of the human stories behind the medals and ceremonies.
The recent removal of Doug’s travel allowance under the DVA scheme creates a significant barrier. Without this support, Doug faces challenges in accepting invitations to speak across the country. Travel costs, accommodation, and related expenses add up, limiting his ability to reach remote or regional areas where his message is often most needed.
This decision risks silencing a vital voice in Australian military history and education. It also diminishes opportunities for communities to engage directly with someone who embodies the true spirit of service.
All the funds raised will go directly to Doug Baird for use in travel expenses.
